Pan Carbon Felt


Pan Carbon Felt, also known as Polyacrylonitrile, is designed and used as high-temperature insulation in vacuum and inert gas furnaces, among other applications. In comparison to Rayon felt, Pan has larger courser fibers, lower surface area, and better oxidation resistance. Material is heat-treated to a temperature of 2192℉ (1200℃).

What is Pan Carbon?
Pan Carbon felt, also known as Polyacrylonitrile, is a specialized refractory insulation material manufactured for high-temperature vacuum and inert gas furnaces, among other applications. Our pan felt is available in carbon and graphite grades that have been pre-fired / heat treated to promote consistent insulation performance, higher purity, and reduced ash content. Felt grades can be purified to less than 10 ppm if needed. Material is rated for temperatures up to 5432℉ (3000℃). Our pan carbon grade is pre-fired to 2192℉ (1200℃), whereas our pan graphite grade is pre-fired to 3992℉ (2200℃).
Pan Vs Rayon Felt
Pan is manufactured with larger courers fibers resulting in lower surface area and better oxidation resistance. The flexible material is stiffer and less soft to the touch but offers great performance at reduced price. For heat treat applications, our office highly recommends pan carbon felt due to the materials handling ease, performance, and reduced price. If operating at temperatures ≥ 3272℉ (1800℃), please use rayon carbon felt as the thermal conductivity is lower than pan.
